Krylon Dual Dresser

I took a funky old dresser and made it beautiful with a stained top, new pulls, and a painted body with Krylon Dual Spray Paint in Piston Gray.

What you need:

  • (2) cans of Piston Gray Krylon Dual Spray Paint
  • Citristrip Paint Stripper
  • Gloves
  • Chip brush and scraper
  • Steel wool
  • Denatured alcohol
  • Minwax Dark Walnut Stain
  • New hardware of choice

How and How Long:

  1. Thickly apply Citristrip paint stripper to the top of the dresser using a wide, cheap, chip brush (make sure to protect your skin and eyes when using this product).
  2. Scrape up stripper after at least 30 minutes. Reappy if needed. Keep reapplying until all the old paint is removed and you're down to the bare wood.
  3. Clean up remaining stripper off the surface with some fine steel wool and denatured alcohol.
  4. Give a quick sanding to the wood top with a fine sand paper.
  5. Apply Minwax Dark Walnut Stain, wipe off. Let sit for a few hours. Repeat process until you get the desired color on the wood top.
  6. Flip dresser upside down on a drop cloth and use painters tape to cover any exposed edges of your stained top.
  7. Apply Krylon Dual Spray Paint on the body of the dresser using a fluid, back and forth motion. Use many light coats until you have complete coverage. (For this small dresser, I used one full can and most of a second can.)
  8. Finish it off with some great new hardware, and you have a completely updated piece of furniture that will work perfectly for your home!
Approximate project time: This dresser had 4 or 5 layers of paint and took 3 applications of the stripper over a period of about 3.5 hours.

What it Costs:

Cost is about $25 for two cans of Krylon Dual Paint, Minwax Dark Walnut Stain, Citristrip Paint Stripper, and new hardware (I got mine for around $2 a piece by shopping around on Ebay, but the price of hardware can vary widely based on your preference and where you buy them).
