Glow-in-the-Dark Star Mobile

My son gets really excited about seeing the stars at night. But since we're in a relatively urban area with lots of light pollution we don't get to see to many of them! We made a starry mobile that glows in the dark to hang in his room. So even on overcast nights, there will still be a few stars to look at.

What you need:

  • (1) can Krylon Glowz paint
  • (1) can Krylon Dual Ivory paint
  • (1) can Krylon Glitter Blast (color of your choice!)
  • (1) can Krylon Clear Coat
  • (1) crochet hoop
  • Thread
  • Scissors

How and How Long:

  1. Cut out the starts: Normally, I would cut stars out of card stock and use a hole puncher to put the thread through. But since I have access to a laser cutter, I cut lots of stars of different sizes out of hardboard. To be honest, the end result isn't all that different, I just wanted an excuse to use the laser cutter. Plain old scissors and paper would work beautifully as well.
  2. Paint, paint and paint again: To get the stars the way I wanted them I applied multiple coats of spray paint in this order: White Krylon Dual (not needed if you have white paper); Krylon Glow-in-the-dark spray paint; Krylon Glitter Blast (sparkly!); Krylon clear coat. If all you wanted was glowing stars, then just the glow-in-the-dark paint will suit you.
  3. Hang it all: Cut lengths of thread for all of the stars, tying one end to the star and the other to what you want to hang the mobile from. I'm using a crochet hoop. It's nice and round and was only a dollar. To get the stars arranged how I wanted them, I put the hoop on the floor and put the stars as far away from the hoop as I wanted to hang them.
  4. Enjoy! When you're happy with that, just tie some string to the hoop to hang the whole thing from and attach it to your ceiling. Let the good times glow.

Approximate project time: 24 hours (including dry time).

What it Costs:

Cost is $25 for 4 cans of spray paint and supplies.
