How and How Long:
- Draw Your Face: Here I used standard posterboard and drew face out to 23 1/4" x 15"
- Cut paper to background shape: You will want to cut off the bones so you have the main shape of the mask. Remember, if at any time you mess up, don't panic. You can easily hide it or fix it in someway by the end of the project.
- Trace onto 3/4" plywood: Trace the mask onto the wood using your paper stencil. I used a jigsaw with a scroll blade.
- Sand down edges: I very briefly sanded down the edges and just getting ride of any stranglers from the cut. I used 220 grit sandpaper and a palm sander.
- Cut out facial features from stencil: Cut out the eyes, the nose, mouth, and top bone. Make sure to seperate the eye from the eyebrow.
- Trace onto 1/4" plywood: Trace the nose mouth, eyes, eyebrows and top bone from 1/4" plywood, and cut out the two side bones from 3/4" plywood. Again, I used a jig saw to cut them out
- Sand and Paint: Now that everything is cut out all you have left to do is sand and paint it all.
- Sanding and Painting: After cutting out the facial features and sanding the edges round, sanding the top bone so it is smooth with the backboard, and cutting out the side bones paint everything accordingly.
- Trace a Line: Line the bone up to the top and trace underneath the flat part.
- Cut the Lines Out: Drill a pilot hole in one side and just cut along the line.
- Glue bone in place: Using a clamp and all purpose white glue, glue the bone to the back board.
- Wrap bone in hemp: Once the bone has dried, Using thick hemp and the line that you cut, wrap the bone in hemp, gluing it secure once done.
- Wrap side bones with hemp: Same as the top bone, wrap the side bones with hemp, gluing the hemp once agian when done with all purpose white glue.
- Make brackets: Make two half "I" shaped brackets to screw the bones onto the back board.
- Paint, Glue, Clearcoat, Done! Using the template from the stencil, paint his warpaint on his forhead. Using a paintmarker, paint in his teeth and glue together. Once dried, spray with clearcoat, let dry add a hook to the back to hang it up, and it is done!
Approxiamte project time: 1 hour.
