Cheri's Decor Board Tutorial

Using Krylon's Magnetic Spray Paint, I was able to create a super cool tween project for my niece for her new bedroom makeover.

What you need:

  • 1 can of Krylon Magnetic Spray Paint
  • DISChangers
  • Gorilla Glue tape
  • Sanding Bug
  • Tack Cloth
  • Knobs and a hook
  • Saw
  • Wood
  • DecoArt craft Paints
  • Pencil
  • Painters tape
  • Exact-o knife
  • Lettering (could be from magazine, or computer print out)
  • Paintbrush
  • Tape measure

How and How Long:

  1. Cut the board to the desired size using Rockler's Saw guide.
  2. Sand over the boards with a Rockler Sanding Bug.
  3. Once the board is smooth pass over it with a tack cloth to remove any excess dust (to create a smooth painting surface).
  4. Measure and divide wood board into 4 sections, marking off with a pencil, then taping off each section with painters tape.
  5. Spray over the top left area with the Krylon Magnetic Spray Paint, using a sweeping even motion. Do light even coats and let it dry for 30 minutes between coats. I applied 6 soats of paint.
  6. Once the last coat is applied, let it dry for 24 hours before finishing the project.
  7. Paint the other 3 sections. One section in white, another in black and the last section in hot pink. Once dry, applied another coat.
  8. Print off a font for my niece using her initial as a monogram (you can use magazine as well). Cut out vinyl with an Exact-o knife and apply it to the black area. (I have a cutting machine I wanted to show people how to use vinyl in a fun creative way).
  9. The white area received brush strokes of black paint in a zebra pattern to go wth her room decor.
  10. I ordered 2 white knobs and a white hook from Rockler. I added them to the pink area so she could hang her necklaces.
Approximate project time: This project was really quick and easy! The project time took about 2.5 hours to execute. It took about 1 day and 6 hours to complete, but that was because of the drying time for the paint.

What it Costs:

I had almost everything on hand to make these boards; depending on what you have on hand you could make these boards for under $20.
