Step Into Spring Door Mat

Fresh, fun colors brighten a plain sisal mat for a more welcoming entryway.

What you need:

  • Krylon Outdoor Spaces® Satin Finish - Satin Fern (#2927)
  • Krylon Outdoor Spaces® Satin Finish - Mango (#2921)
  • Krylon Outdoor Spaces® Satin Finish - Lemon (#2923)
  • Sisal door mat (old or new)
  • Newspaper or drop cloth
  • Duct tape
  • Ruler Pen or pencil

Tips

With all the painting instructions, it's best to spray several times from every angle, so that the small fibers of sisal are painted all the way around. Hold can directly over the mat when spraying, this will keep paint from sneaking under tape seams and give a crisper line. If any stripe lines are "soft" or blurred, simply re-tape and touch up with spray. Label unused paint as "door mat color" and store. This way you can freshen up your mat at any time. Be creative and try using stencils for interesting patterns.

How and How Long:

  1. Set up a spray area by covering a table or other work surface with newspaper or drop cloth. It's best to pick an open space where you can paint the mat from any angle. Always use a mask when painting, even if outdoors.
  2. Spray the entire mat with Lemon and let dry.
  3. Determine the next color and pattern you'd like. Using a ruler, measure the stripe's width. Place matching marks as a guide on your newspaper or drop cloth at the top or bottom of mat in pencil or pen. Make note on the paper of the color of each stripe as a guide.
  4. Using duct tape, mask off all the stripes you want to keep Lemon. Because sisal is a very rough surface, duct tape will adhere better than ordinary masking tape. No need to press the tape down very securely, you'll need to remove it after painting.
  5. Spray the next stripes and let dry.
  6. Remove tape. Repeat step #3 in case your earlier marks have now been painted over.
  7. Mask off all the stripes you want to keep Lemon and Fern.
  8. Spray final stripes Mango. Let dry and remove tape.
