How and How Long:

  1. Draw shapes for a comb, waddle and beak. Trace patterns onto plywood and cut out comb, waddle, and beak with jigsaw. Use Dremel to sand the edges.
  2. Sand entire mailbox and all plywood parts with 100grit sandpaper.
  3. Use five-minute epoxy to secure comb, waddle, and beak onto mailbox.
  4. Cut out pieces of cobblestone texture and glue onto waddle and comb. Cut out extra piece to surround the eye but do not attach yet.
  5. Prime entire box using Krylon Indoor/Outdoor White Primer. Let dry for 10 min.
  6. Mask around beak, waddle, and comb making sure to cover entire box using newspaper and painter's tape. Paint beak using Krylon Indoor/Outdoor Gloss Sun Yellow. Let dry for 10 min.
  7. Mask over beak. Paint waddle and comb using Krylon Indoor/Outdoor Gloss Cherry Red. Also paint extra loose texture piece for around eye. Let dry for 10 min.
  8. Cut out 1-1/4" circle out of paper. Paint entire piece light yellow using acrylic paint. Once dry, paint bright orange starting around the edges and lightly fade strokes inward toward center of circle. Once dry paint 3/4" black pupil in center of eye. Let dry.
  9. Take all masking off of mailbox. Glue textured loose piece onto mailbox. Then glue on eye paper and lastly the acrylic sphere over the eye.
