Dining Chair Makeover

Transform a dining chair from 'plain jane' to fabulous!

What you need:

  • (2) cans Krylon Cherry Red spray paint (or color of your choice)
  • Fabric for Seat Cushion
  • Screwdriver
  • Staple Gun and Staples
  • Scissors
  • Sanding pad
  • Paint to highlight (optional)

How and How Long:

  1. Remove cushion - it is super easy to remove a seat cushion! Turn over the chair and you'll see where to remove screws that holds the seat cushion in place. Pull the screws out and set the seat to the side.
  2. Grab a can of spray paint like Krylon Dual Paint + Primer.
  3. I sprayed this chair within an inch of it's life! Just fyi, I didn't sand the chair down before painting it. The little chippy edges intrigue me, so I wanted to keep them around.
  4. While the spray painted chair is drying (you may need to do a few light coats) remove the fabric from the chair seat using a screwdriver and pliers.
  5. I a.d.o.r.e. the fabric that I found at my local fabric shop. The blue gray pattern and linen nubby texture is just fabulous.
  6. Cut a piece of fabric about 2-3 inches larger than the seat on all sides.
  7. If you don't have a staple gun, please go buy one. I got my staple gun and staples for less than $17 at Lowe's. Please don't use an office-type stapler. You will get frustrated and you'll probably break the stapler.
  8. Begin stapling on one side, then staple the opposite side while pulling the fabric taut. Fold the corners neatly and staple them down.
  9. Use a sanding pad to gently rough up the edges and then if you so desire, highlight the chair by wiping on (and off) a lighter paint color with a rag. (I used Sherwin Williams' Drizzle paint).
  10. Then, re-attach your newly recovered seat cushion! Have I said that I love the fabric? Oh, yeah, I did. I also love how the fabric and paint work together.
Approximate project time: 3 hours.

What it Costs:

Cost is $20 for two cans of Krylon Dual Cherry Red spray paint, staple gun and staples. I had all the other supplies on hand.
