How do I know when I need a new mattress?
How do I know when I need a new mattress?
Mattresses aren't like an appliance—they don't just quit working one day. They gradually change, almost imperceptibly, until over time you notice the signs – you’re tossing and turning, waking up sore in the back, neck or joints, and you’re not sleeping as well as you do when you are away from home.
Any of these signs indicate that you may need a new mattress soon. And while you likely will tell yourself you can put up with the old mattress a bit longer, you'll certainly notice the improvement when you sleep on a new one! You’ll have better support, enhanced comfort and a deeper, more restful sleep.

How do I set my budget?
How do I set my budget?
When it comes to price, remember that purchasing a bed is an investment. That investment can be as large or as small as befits your budget, but in the end, your bed should be something that you’re comfortable sleeping on. When it comes to mattress purchases, most people wish they would have spent a little more rather than less.

What should I look for when shopping for a mattress?
What should I look for when I’m shopping for a new mattress?
It can feel a bit challenging, but there are several things to keep in mind as you test drive new mattresses:
- A mattress should feel good. To you, that may mean firm, plush or something in between. The important thing is that you’re comfortable.
- Try different levels of support. Compare different styles and firmness’s of mattresses to get a better understanding of what’s right for your needs.
- Go with something durable. A mattress is an investment. Choose a mattress built with higher quality, longer-lasting materials that will be supportive and comfortable for years to come.
- Space matters. If you have a spouse or sleeping partner, think about how much sleeping room you each need—a midnight elbow to the ribs doesn’t do much to help you face the day refreshed. Many people find that a queen or especially a king-sized bed gives them enough room to sleep comfortably.

Do I need a new box spring with my mattress?
Do I need a new box spring with my mattress?
We recommend that you purchase a new foundation when you buy your new mattress. It may seem like using the old box spring is an easy place to realize some savings, but that’s not the case in the long run.
A mattress and box spring age together. An old foundation has developed flaws right along with its original mattress. These flaws can transfer through to any new mattress placed upon it, causing the new mattress to break down faster. Investing in a complete set up front saves you the trouble of having to buy another mattress prematurely.

How do I test a mattress effectively?
How do I test a mattress effectively?
- Bring your spouse or partner. Another person on the bed will change how the mattress feels. Is there enough room for the both of you? Try mattresses out together so you can get a sense of how the bed will feel and move with another person on it.
- Wear comfortable clothing. Feel free to take off your coat and shoes to be as comfortable as possible.
- Lay down. Start out on your back. Do you feel comfortable? Next, get into your normal sleep position. Are you still comfortable?
- Take your time. Spend a few minutes on the mattress. Allow your body to adjust to the mattress, and allow the mattress time to conform to you.
- Help your salesperson help you. Let them know what you are feeling, and whether that comfort level is what you have in mind for your body. The more information that you give them, the better they can target the next option.

How should I shop for a guest bed?
How should I shop for a guest bed?
It’s understandable that you may not want to spend too much for a mattress for that rarely used guest room. We’ve even heard some folks say they go for the cheapest set they can find because they don’t want their guests to get too comfortable – they don’t want them to stay too long!
Bearing that in mind, we’d like to make a few suggestions:
- Consider your guests. Who will be visiting? An old college buddy may not mind a budget mattress(or so he says). Your in-laws, on the other hand, will give you an earful the next time they come to stay.
- You might end up using the bed yourself. People use guestrooms for a variety of reasons, from a spare room to use during a master bedroom remodel, or when one partner is sick (or snores badly) and the other needs sleep.
